Comics

Hey, I'm hoping some of you can help.

Alan is really coming along with his reading recently, but we're having a hard time finding him material he enjoys reading rather than is coerced into reading. However, he loves action and superheros, and so I thought of trying some comic books to see if that would get him to look forward to reading.

Now, I know nothing about comic books, but I have the impression some who hang out around here have experience. Can anyone recommend something? It must be tame enough for a 1st grader, but have enough action to keep him interested. Thanks.

I don't know how tame it is, but I enjoy Dr. McNinja. There isn't swearing (that I can remember) and they're pretty interesting as stories go. You may want to take and look and see what you think.

I started reading old Xmen comics around second grade.

See if you can find him some silver-age comics. the Comic Code Authority had more sway back then and kept everything free of controversy. And PG.

Marvel publishes several silver-age collections.

DC Comics has a line of comics intended for young kids. S-Boogie enjoys Batman: Brave and the Bold, Superfriends, Billy Batson & The Magic of Shazam, and Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the Eighth Grade. Individual issues come out more or less once a month and are later collected in book form (like this). Marvel Comics also has a kids' line but I'm not as familiar with it.

I haven't checked it out myself yet (although I am looking forawrd to it once school is out) but I have heard that Orson Scott Card and Marvel teamed up to present his Enders game story as a comic book. The story itself is great and I remember reading it about 3rd grade, so perhaps it would work. I still read the series and get more out of it each year so I hope it works out for him.

Robert Munsch is a great author with the most outlandish stories. He is very well known in Canada and best known in the States for "Love you Forever."

You can listen to many of his books online.

Not a comic book, and I have not read them, but I know our second grader enjoyed the "Captain Underpants" books last year. You are welcome to borrow them and see what you think.

Thanks for trying to help me improve my reading skills Scot.

You may wish, in addition to comic books, to read the FABLEHAVEN series to him. It's what Harry Potter could have been, had JK had a better editor. :)

i still have visual memories of donald duck cartoons, as well as the ability to recite a number of story lines from them. i read a lot of different comics, but it's the donald duck that has remained with me. i was shocked and dismayed when I found out that my mother had thrown them away.

Hi, I'm a new reader to the blog, but I'd like to add my contribution, if that's ok!

As Mr. Fob said, there's DC Comics' young readers line, with great comics for kids.

I also STRONGLY recommend the Bone books, by Jeff Smith. Those are wonderful all-ages comics (and I do mean all ages, they don't dumb down the stories, and everyone can enjoy the ride), with beautiful art and engaging characters. The comic book adaptation of Coraline is another great book, but the story is a bit darker in tone.

However, I'd stay cleer of anything related to Orson Scott Card, as he's made some of the most outrageously homophobic remarks I've seen in recent years.

Best,
J.

Wow guys (and Sarah :-)), thank you for all the suggestions.

I'll head to a comic book store after work today, and will look to get a sample of each of what you've all suggested. We'll then see which ones survive the Alan-Interest-Holding test.

"Thanks for trying to help me improve my reading skills Scot."

For a guy who needs help reading, though, your witting is wonderful :-).

James "Hi, I'm a new reader to the blog, but I'd like to add my contribution, if that's ok! "

You bet James, and welcome!

"he's made some of the most outrageously homophobic remarks I've seen in recent years."

Err, yeah, I've read some of that... but he says he has homosexual friends...
