Just, Please, Spend It Wisely

Ah, the 15th of April, the day I mark 16 years of commitment, 13 years of marriage, as “single” and sign to the truth of that false statement under penalty of law, and, because one of us is male, send in a disproportionate percentage of our home’s income, which, nevertheless, isn’t near enough to keep our government from spending into an obscene debt for which our children will pay the price for decades to come.

Must this day come but once a year?

Eh, I think when I get back home I’ll take the family for a hike and then for ice-cream. I’ll forget about it by then, and I promise to only hold resentment for a couple hours into the day :-).

Scot, what do monogamous, unmarried hetero-sexual couples do in their taxes? Isn't there some work around for people who live together? And while it's not the whole truth that you live, at least it's closer than marking single...

Actually, I stand a bit corrected. We use an accountant and I didn’t look at how he did it this year until now. The form does show me as unmarried but looking at it now I see I get to mark “head of household” instead of "single", as we have children, but Rob marks single.

I get to claim him as my dependent though. Another falsehood I’m forced to sign to by law.

Truth be told, I’m far more dependant upon him ;-).

Ugh. When I read this I realise anew how blessed and fortunate I am to live in a country that recognises gay relationships, married or common law, as being equal in every way to their heterosexual counterparts.

Sixteen years! That's wonderful! I'm single right now, but I hope one day I'll be celebrating that kind of milestone.

On the plus side, down here in Utah, we don’t have to deal with the plagues of locusts and constant threat of angel attack that come with gay marriage. All your rivers are of blood now, right?

I’m jealous. :-)
